Warley Wood is located half a mile south of the village of Leaden Roding and a short distance from the historic town of Great Dunmow in rural Essex and is accessed through a locked gate.

Situated over level loamy lime clay soils, the mature canopy in the southern section comprises majestic oak standards, hornbeam, ash and birch with occasional hazel coppice below. Towards the centre of the woodland is an area of young hazel, hornbeam, birch, willow and ash approaching thicket stage, providing a welcome refuge for the local wildlife. Western and northern parts of the woodland consist of older hornbeam, poplar, oak, ash and willow with hawthorn and hazel in the shrub layer. Come spring and summer, the ground layer is brimming with Ancient Woodland indicators such as bluebell, wood anemones, primrose and dog’s mercury.

There are a number of grassy patches throughout the woodland that if strimmed would serve as lovely camping spots. Far reaching farmland views are enjoyed from the northern boundary.  

Mammals including muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare are frequently spotted making their way amongst the stems. The tranquil location attracts countless feathered visitors including owl, woodpecker, greenfinch and an array of harmonious songbirds.

If It Were Mine

Cutting a few paths through the younger area of woodland would make a great nature trail for children to explore. Bushcraft would be high on my list of activities, along with ‘leave no trace’ camping weekends in the warmer weather. Some logs would definitely be stacked and left to season for the burner at home.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • From the town of Great Dunmow, head south along the B184 towards The Rodings and Ongar passing over the A120.
  • Continue through the villages of High Roding and Aythorpe Roding (this village is known as Roundbush Green on some maps) passing Aythorpe Roding village hall on the right.
  • After 5.5 miles you will arrive at the village of Leaden Roding, passing the primary school on the right and fire station on the left.
  • At the roundabout, take the first exit left at The Country Shop and then immediately left again (onto High Easter Road) signposted for The Easters.
  • Continue along High Easter Road passing over the yellow lines that cross the road as you leave the village and passing the entrance to ‘Chill’s Bodyworks’ on the left.
  • After 0.4 miles you will drive through woodland either side of you. As the road bears left, turn right onto the track and Byway (point X on the plan below).
  • Continue along the track and after 90 metres you will see a steel gate on the right (point A).
  • Please park in a safe and suitable place, taking care not to obstruct the track nor any access points.
  • Please climb over or walk round the gate (sorry, we do not provide keys for viewings) and the woodland is to the right of the track.


  • The northern boundary CD is the top of the earth bank with ditch and farmland beyond, DE is the top of the earth bank with ditch and an area of further woodland beyond.
  • The western boundary is in part the inside edge of the track, indicated by green paint on wooden posts and trees that may be offset by a short distance, along with green paint on wooden posts and trees up to the northern boundary.
  • The eastern boundary is the top of the earth bank with the ditch and council road beyond.
  • The southeastern boundary is the top of the earth bank with the ditch and byway beyond.
