Description
Roundbush Wood is situated half a mile south of the village of Leaden Roding and a short distance from the ancient market town of Great Dunmow in rural Essex. Access is through a locked gate and along a track and presents a great opportunity for a weekend woodsman.
Located on level lime and loamy clay soils, the mature canopy comprises oak standards, ash, hornbeam, birch, poplar, field maple and willow. Below within the shrub layer are hawthorn with successive younger ash and hornbeam as well as some magnificent hazel coppice stems; some of these are upwards of 80 years of age or even older. The ash and hazel could certainly provide a new owner with a modest stock of logs for the hearth if required. Come spring and summer the ground layer is awash with Ancient Woodland indicators such as bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, foxglove and dog’s mercury, providing sustenance for our important pollinators.
Towards the west of the woodland is an open area perfect for some bushcraft by day and a place to stargaze come nightfall. Rural views are enjoyed from the northern boundary; this would make a delightful spot to sit with a book on a warm evening.
Numerous feathered visitors including green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and many acoustic songsters delight the tranquillity found here. Muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare make up just a small portion of the mammal populace.
If It Were Mine
I would firstly strim and clear the open spaces within the woodland and set about sowing some wildflowers. I would also clear some of the deadwood, but leave enough to encourage an insect habitat. Setting up a few bird boxes and trail cameras is a must! My plans would definitely include occasional camping under the stars.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
