Description

Quiet and peaceful, Buzz Wood is not to be missed. This delightful Ancient Woodland is packed with mature oak and ash. The lower canopy has a healthy array of young trees including sycamore, ash, birch and oak, providing seclusion and diversity. The floor is abundant with seasonal flowers, ferns and mosses.

Buzz Wood is mostly flat but is on two distinct levels that slope away to the north. There is a hard track that descends to a hard surfaced area that is private and ideal for picnics, camping or even a mobile saw mill. The fabulous aspect from the wood looking out over surrounding woodland and arable fields, is great for observing ‘comings and goings’ of wildlife. Quiet adventurers at dusk and dawn will likely hear the rustle of fox, badger and fallow deer, the sharp eyed may even glimpse a weasel.

There is plenty of birdsong to delight the auditory senses, from the wonderful ‘laughing’ notes of the green woodpecker, the whirring song of the nightjar and haunting call of the tawny owl. You may also hear woodlark, great tit, coal tit, lesser woodpecker, chaffinch, robin, wren, coal tit, goldcrest, blackcap, garden warbler, blackbird, common crossbill and tree pipit.

Vehicular access to the wood is provided by a hard surfaced track suitable for a 2WD car at all times of the year and runs from the council road all the way to the parking area inside the wood. The nearby village of Kirklington and Eakring are a short distance away providing basic amenities. Mansfield is a 10 minute drive, with Nottingham 20 minutes.

Historically the wider area formed part of the UK’s first onshore oilfield and was in operation during the mid-1940s; the well heads were sealed many years ago. The hard surfaced area was created when a well was drilled all those years ago.

A woodland such as this offers a range of opportunities for activities such as camping and crafts. Buzz Wood would be a great investment for anyone with a passion for the outdoors.

If It Were Mine

I would remove the laurel and plant strict numbers of native trees in the open areas, thereby preparing for future management and setting the scene for the next generation. I would create some deadwood habitats and some nesting boxes.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
