This attractive wood is situated half a mile northwest of the Cornish hamlet of St Columb Major and the coastal town of Newquay is 15 minutes by car. Infused with a peaceful atmosphere, the northern boundary extends some 200 metres along the tree lined banks of the River Menalhyl. The rich diversity of riparian wildlife, tree and plant species growing here would appeal to those with an interest in conservation and countryside management.

The surrounding catchment is primarily agricultural fields and woodland, with a bedrock largely comprising calcareous slate and limestone. Sparkling Water Wood is accessed by a good concrete track, hardcore has been laid to provide hard standing between the trees near the entrance, and a path meanders through the woodland with a small footbridge crossing a stream, which leads to the river. The river has resident brown trout and it is believed wild sea trout run upstream to spawn.

Several large mature oaks grow along the external boundaries, all of which are currently fenced and stock-proof. The wood is predominantly willow, with pockets of ash, sycamore and birch. Shrubs include elder and hawthorn. Along the river’s edge are sphagnum mosses, sundews and grey willow, which support various amphibians and dragonflies. There is also wild garlic, primrose and ferns including the hart’s-tongue. Birdlife includes the hen harrier and a range of woodland warblers.

This tranquil, private riverside woodland with good access is perfect for a family camping holiday. Tucked away in a quiet corner, it’s an excellent base from which to explore one of the most picturesque parts of the country.

If It Were Mine

I would seek to preserve this diverse, wildlife rich habitat. Perhaps install some bird and bat boxes and a bench to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There is the potential for a sustainable source of firewood for the hearth, or even a summertime BBQ.
