Nant Bran Wood is a wonderful Ancient Wood, full of character and typifying upland Welsh oak habitat. It occupies a sunny southwest aspect in the Nant Bran catchment, with the village of Llanfihangel Nant Bran to the east. There are stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the highest peak in South Wales, Pen y Fan. The busy market town of Brecon is around 20 minutes by car.

A quiet country lane runs along the southwest boundary, lined with herb-rich hedges containing herb Robert, meadow sweet and others. In the western corner of the wood is a gated access point and useful turning area in a former quarry. We are informed that there is a second entrance further along the road which has not been used for some time but this could potentially be reinstated by the new owners.

From the turning area a number of informal paths track through the oak wood, with a characteristic ground flora of mosses, wildflowers and ferns, such as the hard shield and broad buckler. There is good quality oak in the wood, the western part having been lightly thinned some 10 years ago. Further on the tree species composition changes to birch, hazel, holly, the occasional yew and others, where the woodland has established on former pasture land.

Splendid mature oaks line previous field boundaries in places and occasional openings in the canopy would make ideal camping spots. Honeysuckle, bluebell, various fungi, woodland wildflowers and ferns enrich the diverse flora. A badger set can be found towards the centre of the wood and the bird population includes nuthatches and numerous warblers.

Nant Bran Wood offers excellent potential to the prospective woodland owner, with great amenity value and options for conservation and native woodland management. The location is ideal for those looking for a rural retreat with the sound of Nant Bran stream permeating the peaceful atmosphere, with abundant recreational activities available in the surrounding region.

If It Were Mine

There are numerous options available at Nant Bran Wood. I would continue to lightly thin the oak in the short-term, install some bird/bat boxes and perhaps explore reinstating the second access point. Some of the openings could be cleared and maintained as an ideal family picnic or camping spot.

Directions & Access

Head out of Brecon on the Cradoc Road, continue for 1 ½ miles to Cradoc village passing the phone box on your left.

At the next junction take the left turn sign posted Llanfihangel Nant Bran.

Continue through the village of Aberyscir and follow the road signposted Llanfihangel Nant Bran.

Coming in to the village of Llanfihangel Nant Bran keep left at the telephone box passing the church on the left.

Keep right at the next junction crossing the bridge and pass a turning to the right.

Continue for 700 metres where you will see our ‘Woods4Sale’ sign on the right. Please park here in a suitable location being careful not to obstruct the road.


The northwest boundary is marked by an old wire fence in need of repair and marked by trees and posts with pink paint.

The southwest boundary is the inside edge of the road.

All other boundaries are marked either by an agricultural fence or hedge.
