Great Gorse Shaw is an excellent example of Kentish lowland woodland, in a rural region within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is situated at approximately 131 metres above sea level with a sheltered northwest aspect.

The wood has significant historical interest. During Cromwell's reign, the nearby Rochester Castle was attacked by the parliamentary army. Apparently the troops camped at Great Gorse Shaw prior to the siege and left various artefacts on the site. Troops also camped here prior to the D-Day landings during WW2.

The lime rich soils with flint deposits host a range of broadleaf species, predominantly ash and hornbeam, with a number of magnificent veteran beech trees. Other species include hazel, hawthorn, cherry, oak, holly and elder.

Historic management of the woodland would have been through rotational coppicing with much of the hornbeam being mature stool in nature. However, no significant woodland management has taken place over recent decades.

The wood is accessed via a gated entrance off a quiet country lane which defines the southern and western boundaries. Within the wood a wide soft track runs from the gate to a useful storage shed (approx. 5 metres x 7 metres) and continues for 50 metres or so as a woodland ride. Additionally, there is another storage shed and water available.

There are several patches of bluebells and primroses and a profusion of dog’s mercury carpeting the woodland floor within the shady understorey to the north. There are frequent signs of wildlife including burrows and animal tracks; dormice have been identified in the local area. Many birds such as the goldfinch, robin, dunnock, song thrush, tawny owl and sparrow hawk have all been recorded in the locality.

If It Were Mine

I would periodically flail the track and look to re-establish coppicing at Great Gorse Shaw Wood. This would enhance the woodland flora and fauna whilst also providing useful timber.

Directions & Access

  • Heading northwest on the M2 the road becomes the A2, take the first exit towards Cobham / Shorne.
  • At the roundabout take the second exit towards Cobham, called Halfpence Lane.
  • After around 1 mile at the mini roundabout take the first exit signposted Luddesdown.
  • Pass a turning on the right and stay on this road, passing under a railway bridge.
  • At the T-junction take the righthand turn signposted Luddesdown.
  • Continue ahead passing the Golden Lion pub and through the village of Luddesdown.
  • Pass a left turn signposted the Parish Church and bear right into Oakenden Road.
  • Take the next left signposted Dean Road.
  • Continue for around 1 mile take the left turn signposted Great Buckland.
  • Continue along Strawberry Hill lane and turn left at the T-junction, you will see our ‘For Sale’ sign on a gate on the left.
  • Great Gorse Shaw is ahead.


  • The north boundary is defined by an old earth bund and marked by trees with white paint.
  • The east boundary is fenced.
  • The south and west boundaries are the inside edge of the road.
