Harping Wood lies just north of the hamlet of Forest Row, Sussex. This village draws its name from nearby Ashdown Forest, a large royal hunting park dating back to the 13th century. Access to the wood is off a quiet lane connecting to Lewes Road (A22), from where the south coast is less than an hour by car. This woodland offers a great combination of amenity and recreation potential.

A recently upgraded stone track fronted by a secure metal gate delineates the western boundary. The wood has some dense areas of useful hazel coppice, perfect for craft work. The fertile clay soils present ideal growing conditions for oak trees, resulting in remarkable standards towering over the hazel. The mature coppice stools found underneath the oak and ash trees have been traditionally managed, cut over a rotation of several years. More recently the woodland has been managed for sport - a large deer population roams the wider wood and two old high-seats can still be found.

Designated as an Ancient Woodland, Harping Wood has a biodiversity which has established over the past 400 years or more. An array of mycorrhizal fungi, wildflowers, insects, birds and mammals add to the exceptional habitat. In spring, much of the woodland floor is adorned by bluebell and primrose and a decent quantity of deadwood enhances the bird population which includes numerous songbirds, a resident kestrel and an owl.

If It Were Mine

A property as diverse as this is great for a young family to explore wildlife and perhaps enjoy an occasional camping expedition. Some gathering of wood-fuel is also a possibility, utilising the existing Forestry Commission thinning licence.
