Hare Wood is a substantial amenity woodland with good prospects for practicing some light silviculture. Part of a larger ancient woodland site which was re-planted primarily with beech some 40-50 years ago, it has an easily manageable level topography and benefits from roadside access.

The woodland is within walking distance of the village of Thorpe Salvin, with its family friendly pub. Sheffield is around 10 miles away and can be reached by train from Kiveton Station which you pass on the way to the wood.

The woodland has a quiet country lane to the western boundary, the surrounding landscape is attractive rolling agricultural fields. The northern boundary is a hard track and within the woodland is a soft track which could be used to thin the wood.

Along the western flank is a shelter strip of pine. Other tree species include ash, sycamore and tall sweet chestnut (particularly suited to the soil conditions). Understorey species include holly and hazel.

A particular feature is the rich biodiversity of the wood; a chance hare or mouse can be seen, along with numerous birds including the grey partridge, woodcock, woodpecker, tree sparrow, buzzard and even a shy goshawk. Woodland mammals include badgers, an occasional fox and roe deer.

If It Were Mine

Initially I would gently thin the strip of pine and look to extract some timber from the wider wood. Conveniently, there is a Forestry Commission thinning licence in place.
