Hawk Wood is a spectacular mixed broadleaf woodland set in a pleasantly undulating landscape in rural South Yorkshire. Situated approximately 130 metres above sea level, surrounded by arable fields and woodland.

The wood is accessed via an old Roman road called Packman Lane and from here a useful hard access track suitable for a 2WD vehicle leads to the woodland boundary. A short walk (around half a mile) along a footpath brings you to the picturesque village of Thorpe Salvin and its family friendly pub serving meals is an added bonus.

This ancient woodland site was replanted around 40 years ago, predominantly with beech which is growing well on the fertile magnesium limestone soils. Other tree species include Scots pine, ash, sycamore, birch and sweet chestnut. Holly can be found in the understorey, and the rich base soils support a host of wildflowers. In spring, a carpet of bluebells adorn the woodland floor, other species include wood anemone and yellow archangel. These ancient woodland soils also support a number of fungi species.

The woodland has a rich biodiversity; a chance hare or mouse can be seen, along with numerous birds including the grey partridge, woodcock, woodpecker, tree sparrow, buzzard and even a shy goshawk! Woodland mammals include badgers, an occasional fox and roe deer. A useful ride runs up both the east and western boundaries, a track flanks the southern edge and a stone wall lined with hazel coppice makes up the boundary to the north.

A woodland such as this offers a wealth of opportunity; the current owners have been carefully working to extract some woodfuel and carrying out woodland crafts. Such an interesting, well-located property as this is a real gem.

If It Were Mine

There is the opportunity to lightly thin Hawk Wood. I would encourage the wildlife by installing some bird and bat boxes. There is great scope for recreational activities such as camping and woodland crafts. Hawk Wood would be a great investment for anyone with a passion for the outdoors.

Please be aware certain woodland management activities may require a licence or permissions.
