The wood lies on gently sloping ground on the edge of historic Worsbrough Village which dates back to the Doomsday Book. Worsbrough is now on the southern outskirts of Barnsley which is two miles to the north. The wood abuts Worsbrough Hall to the southwest and is variously surrounded by woods and fields to other compass points.

Worsbrough Wood lies on level to gently sloping ground with a northerly aspect. Much of the wood is fringed by mature trees including oak, sycamore and sweet chestnut. The trees within are generally younger ranging from perhaps 20-50 years of age. There is a sizeable area of young oak and a couple of small stands of silver birch. Other species present include elm and willow, giving a healthy diversity in the mix. There is a variety of woody shrubs and young regeneration especially in the northern part of the property. To the south where the stands are less densely stocked there are small open areas and the ground beneath the trees is largely given to grass.

The public road wraps round two sides of the wood with access via a drop kerb at the southeast corner of the property. This could easily link to the network of soft tracks that permeate the wood and which give access to all parts.

Thanks to its diverse age structure Worsbrough Wood could produce an indefinite small stream of firewood – plenty for a hearth or two. It also offers the opportunity for some silviculture on a modest scale as well as forming an attractive habitat for a range of birds. When we visited we noted tits, song thrushes and a nuthatch – there’ll be plenty more besides.

If you want an affordable property offering wood-fuel and an opportunity for a little woodland management for a range of outcomes then this is certainly worth a look.

If It Were Mine

I’d apply for a thinning licence from the Forestry Commission, and then begin a gentle harvest of firewood whilst aiming to maintain a varied age structure and species composition.
