Brook Wood is situated in a fantastic, tranquil setting directly on the North Wales/Shropshire border. This administrative boundary is defined by Shell Brook, a small stream that flows along the western boundary of the wood. Forming part of the river Dee catchment, Shell Brook once fed a nearby former watermill known as Knolton Mill. The pleasant and fertile woodland has a southwest aspect and a diverse range of mature broadleaf species.

Approached along a recently upgraded hard track, Brook Wood has a useful hard area that could be used for parking. From this hard area an unsurfaced track leads to a well-built footbridge over the brook. Much of the woodland was planted around 30 years ago and is growing very well. A great deal of natural regeneration is seen where light levels allow. Tree species in the wood include ash, sycamore, prunus, alder, wild cherry, poplar, willow and hazel. A rich ground flora of various ferns, herb robert, meadowsweet and horsetails can also be found. The higher ground has some good quality ash stems that are growing very well in the deep brown earth soils.

There are frequent signs of wildlife, such as the occasional animal track, a badger set and a wide variety of birdsong including a chance owl call. This attractive and biodiverse woodland is ideal for those interested in conservation, wildlife spotting or recreation, whilst also appealing to those looking for a good source of sustainable wood fuel.

If It Were Mine

I would consider installing a seating area on the bank of Shell Brook, and carry out some light thinning works in places. This would enhance the woodland whilst also providing a moderate quantity of timber.
