Trent Wood lies on the banks of the River Trent on the western edge of Stone in northwest Staffordshire. Junction 14 of the M6 is 7 miles to the south enabling easy access from Birmingham and the West Midlands.

The east side of Trent Wood fronts the town’s A34 ring road. A new roundabout (2016) by the entrance means that the woodland gate is no longer reached via a drop kerb, but it is still accessible. There is a hard track inside the gate. For the most part the public road is atop a banking above the wood, and that combined with the woodland vegetation means that traffic noise has little impact on the wider property. Walking west one arrives at the crescents of poplar which front the meandering river, beyond which are open fields and woods giving a delightful outlook. Given that the ownership extends to the middle of the river, the opportunities for angling on this private stretch of water are self-evident.

The majority of the wood is on level ground and is dominated by two distinct coupes of rapidly maturing poplar adjacent to the river. Elsewhere there is a variety of hardwoods with the occasional oak giving way progressively to sycamore, elm, cherry and ash with increasing elements of birch, alder and willow as one approaches the ponds and ditches.

Unsurprisingly there seems to be plenty of avian wildlife in this riparian property. When on site we heard woodpeckers, a variety of songsters, and we also put up a couple of woodcock and a pheasant. And of course the river hosts a variety of ducks, geese, coots, moorhens and swans.

Trent Wood is an extensive and private woodland with good amenity credentials from camping and riverside BBQs to angling and a touch of rough shooting….not forgetting the opportunity for a bit of woodland management too! Now at less than £4,000 per acre, Trent Wood has become one of the most affordable water-side properties in central England.

If It Were Mine

I would clear the line of the raised hard track within the wood to enhance vehicular access and pipe the culvert near the entrance. Routine operations might include vegetation management, especially along the riverside to maintain angling stances. In time the two poplar coupes could be felled and restocked with appropriate native hardwoods. I might even consider cleaning the ponds and perhaps constructing a boardwalk. Plenty to do here!

Directions & Access

  • From junction 14 of the M6 head north on the A34 following signs for Stone.
  • Stay on the A34 as it bypasses the west side of Stone until you reach a double roundabout.
  • Continue north on the A34 (now dual carriageway) for a further 600 metres to the next roundabout.
  • The woodland gate is below this roundabout to your left.


  • The west boundary (DE) is the midline of the River Trent.
  • The northwest boundary (AE) is just southeast of the ditch and is then defined by a fence running up to the north tip of the wood (A).
  • The east boundary (ABC) is the verge of the public road (believed to follow the line of a redundant fence at the base of the roadside banking).
  • The short south boundary (CD) is identified by red-topped posts (including one outside the boundary near the road to help viewers locate this boundary).
