Part of a larger Ancient Woodland site and flanked on two sides by a good quality granite access track, Partridge Copse is a distinctive, easily managed woodland. This quiet property is a few miles west of the bustling historic town of Tring, with its good facilities and an excellent natural history museum.
A secure metal gate opens on to a recently upgraded access track, which is suitable for a 2WD vehicle. To the centre of the property a useful woodland management ride runs from north to south. To the west of this ride are impressively tall beech trees of veteran proportions. Fertile forest soils and the wide-spacing of these trees have resulted in a dense flora of ferns and blackberry, with hazel, holly and naturally regenerated birch and beech trees.
Further east, the woodland is dominated by Japanese larch and younger beech, interspersed with birch and other broadleaf trees. The tighter spacing of the trees in this area of the woodland results in an open vegetation layer, with the occasional fern in places.
Many species of bird frequent this woodland, a tawny owl is often heard as are coal tits and blackcaps. A large deer population including fallow, roe and muntjac roam the wider wood.
Partridge Copse, with its level ground conditions, good accessibility and combination of woodland types, makes it an excellent woodland for the aspiring woods-person. Larch is a durable and useful timber for a range of purposes. Beech was once a favoured timber for furniture making and gives fantastic woodfuel. There is a Forestry Commission thinning licence in place should a new owner wish to carry out some light thinning of the wood.
A planning condition prevents this woodland from having a new fence erected on the unfenced boundaries.
If It Were Mine
I would maintain the ride to the east of the woodland and perhaps under-plant with broadleaf trees where light levels allow. A phase of gentle thinning would also be beneficial for the woodland, and yield a moderate quantity of useful timber.

Directions & Access
- From Junction 11 of the A41 take the B4635 (or Aylesbury Road) towards Tring.
- After ¾ of a mile passing the sign to Tring take the second right called Park Road.
- Continue along Park Road for ½ a mile passing The Castle pub on the right.
- Take the next right along Hastoe Lane and continue for 800 metres passing under a bridge.
- Turn left and continue for 1 ¼ miles passing the turning to your right. You will see a metal gate on the right with a ‘Red Rock Forestry’ sign.
- Park in a suitable location, being careful not to obstruct the road. Climb the gate, sorry we do not supply keys for viewings.
- Continue along the track for 200 metres.
- On your right you will see a sign with ‘Partridge Copse’ the woodland is beyond.
- The northeast boundary is marked by trees and wooden posts with pink paint.
- The southeast boundary is the inside of edge of the track and marked by posts with green paint.
- The southwest boundary is the inside edge of the track and marked by wooden posts with blue paint.
