Description

Smithincott Wood lies on the western flank of a larger woodland overlooking rolling farmland. The village of Uffcolme is about a mile to the north and the market town of Cullompton is 3½ miles to the southwest. Junction 27 of the M5 is 5 minutes away giving easy access to Exeter (half an hour to the southwest) and Bristol (1¼ hours up country).

The wood has direct frontage to a minor county road. It is accessed via a gate off this road at its southern corner which links to a firm unsurfaced track that runs the entire east side of the property. The upper southeast part of the wood is level or gently sloping. Moving northwest the ground begins to fall away to intermdiate slopes giving a broad outlook across farmland and the Culm Valley.

Smithincott is principally a broadleaf woodland. A mix of mature beech, sycamore and sweet chestnut overlooks a bank of coppice sweet chestnut which also contains some harvestable stems. A variety of conifers are interspersed through the broadleaves dominated by larch and Douglas fir plus the occasional Scots pine. Towards the northeast edge the conifers (principally Douglas fir) start to dominate.

A light understorey of regeneration is supplemented by a scattering of shrubs, with holly and elder particularly evident. Patches of bramble towards the south give way to a generally clean and easily walked woodland floor with rush, bluebell and ferns.

The internal track which is accessible to cars in most weathers leads to an open glade about 50 metres inside the gate offering an ideal area for parking, small-scale timber processing and camping. There’s plenty to do here from stand management and harvesting to quiet recreation and enjoyment amidst tranquil scenery and an array of woodland birds and mammals.

If It Were Mine

Some of the multiple sweet chestnut coppice stems would benefit from thinning and I might also turn my eye to small group fellings among larch and Douglas fir with a view to encouraging the regeneration of the next generation.
