This peaceful riverside woodland is in a delightful rural catchment in the Parish of Llandarog, Carmarthenshire. It is five miles southeast of the busy market town of Carmarthen, just off the A48 which continues to the M4 motorway.
Rusting Poplars is a standalone woodland, with cultivated fields to the northwest and the river Gwendraeth Fach meandering along the southwest boundary. The resultant habitat is wonderfully characteristic of riparian woodland, with tall widely spaced poplar dominating the upper canopy along with alder, sycamore, ash, birch, willow and lovely old oaks along the field boundaries.
Riparian woodlands are rich in biodiversity, chiffchaffs and other songbirds can be spotted in the wood, whilst kingfishers, herons, dippers are also known to the area. The river Gwendraeth Fach is home to otters, trout, sea trout and salmon. A smaller tributary, Afon Dulais also conjoins the river at the southeast corner. The fertile, moist soils and wide spacing of the trees result in a dense and varied undergrowth. The current owner maintains a circular path within the wood and there is scope to carry out some under-planting in places.
A quiet country lane runs along the eastern boundary, with access to the wood via a metal gate. Enjoying open views of the surrounding valley, this peaceful, well located woodland would be ideal for those interested in conservation, whilst also offering great amenity value.
If It Were Mine
I would periodically maintain the circular path and control any encroaching exotics. I would also under-plant with riparian tree species such as alder where possible. There are several ideal locations for installing a bench to enjoy the surrounding natural habitat.
