Description

This attractive broadleaf plantation is set 25 minutes’ drive to the northwest of the seaside resort of Eastbourne, East Sussex. The woodland forms part of a larger tree planting scheme, which was established on fertile agricultural land around 15 to 20 years ago in the picturesque rural parish of Arlington.

The property is accessed by an unsurfaced track, which continues as a network of soft rides within the woodland. Along the north and south boundaries of the wood mature oaks provide pleasant shaded areas, with views overlooking agricultural fields. There is a spectacular ancient oak and hornbeam woodland to the west of Beaton’s Grove, which has a stunning display of bluebells in spring. This provides an indication of how this young wood may look in the future.

Around two thirds of the woodland is oak, there is also hornbeam, field maple, hazel, willow, lime, damson and others. Part of the wood is ash, which is showing possible signs of ash dieback. However, overall the trees have established very well and the current owners have carried out some light thinning and pruning, resulting in a good quality stand of English oak and mixed broadleaf.

A particular feature of the wood is the number of useful open rides that run along the boundaries and centrally bisect the property. These will be particularly useful for future management of the wood, and also make a great habitat for insects. A number of butterflies such as the red admiral, small tortoiseshell and small white can be seen as well as wild bees and moths.

There are also a few nesting birds in the wood and the close proximity to ancient woodland further enriches the biodiversity.

The great location and peaceful surroundings make this a wonderful amenity woodland with lots of potential. Already a moderate sustainable source of woodfuel is available through further thinning or coppicing. Beaton’s Grove is in a fantastic location for a family nature camping trip with lots of recreational activities available in the region.

If It Were Mine

I would maintain the rides and continue with light thinning in parts. The ash showing signs of dieback could be felled and replanted with another broadleaf species. Beaton’s Grove represents a good investment as the young woodland steadily progresses to a mature stand of fine oak with excellent accessibility.
