Description

Green Foot Wood is a mixed woodland containing some large Poplar, Oak, Ash, Sweet Chestnut, occasional Beech with some areas of mature Scots Pine mixed with Larch. The understorey is mainly Birch, Rowan, regenerating Ash and Sweet Chestnut. There is also some old Sweet Chestnut coppice stools in places. Quite surprising diversity for a small woodland!

The woodland is classified as Ancient Woodland, which means it has had continuous tree cover since 1600. It is full of wildlife including owls, hawks, buzzards, woodcock, a multitude of songbirds and many Fallow deer, including a rare white one.

The ground rises to the south, giving good drainage and some springs that could provide a useful water supply for ponds or other water features. In the north western end of the woodland is a large hollow, already quite wet with a spring above, surrounded by large Poplars that could be easily made into a large pond.

The access to the woodland is along a hard grassy track. It lies at around 150 metres above sea level and the soils are freely draining fertile loams.

Green Foot Wood has other woodland on all sides except the southern boundary which is farmland.
