Description

Ellen Wood takes its name from the old English word for elder, which can be found growing here. It lies just outside the village of Northchapel, so called because its church was once a chapelry to the north of Petworth town, around six miles away. The bustling town of Haslemere is a similar distance to the northwest.

A recently surfaced track leads from a securely gated entrance off the A283. Conveniently, there are two access points into the property from tracks which flank two sides of the wood, facilitating convenient onward management of this attractive mixed woodland.

Ellen Wood consists of two distinctively separate areas. To the west there is an area of strongly growing sweet chestnut coppice and young birch whilst to the east is a stand of fine formed oak, beech and mature ash and hazel coppice. A large impressive veteran Scots pine tree stands on the southern boundary, close to the second access point.

The surrounding landscape is largely designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, sitting within the South Downs National Park. The fertile and freely draining clay and loamy soils give rise to excellent tree growing conditions.

Overall, the topography is level with a few hollows to the east which adds interest to the woodland floor, which is rich with wildflowers in spring and summer. An old soft track passes through the wood from the south.

The frequent sound of a nuthatch can be heard along with an occasional woodpecker or owl. A large deer population roams the wider woodland. Ellen Wood has a lovely nature reserve feel to it, a perfect spot to camp amongst the bluebells.

If It Were Mine

I would coppice the younger area when ready and respace, encouraging any oaks to grow on. I would install birdboxes in the mature area and consider some light thinning of denser areas to allow the remaining trees to put on girth and mature.

Please note some management operations may require a felling licence.
