Description

Coed Tafalog is situated in a peaceful valley some 25 minutes’ drive to the bustling town of Machynlleth, Powys. Located close to Snowdonia National Park, there are many excellent hiking routes within close proximity to this enchanting bluebell wood. There is a caravan near the access gate that has been situated at the wood for may years, which is to be included in the sale.

The woodland has road frontage along a quiet lane and extends along the western flanks of Moel Blaen-y-Cwm, a picturesque 470 metre mount designated as common land. There is a fast-flowing stream Nant Garnedd to the north, beyond which is a neighbouring commercial conifer plantation. The stream features several pools and waterfalls and a area ideal for wild camping.

This predominantly oak woodland was at one time grazed by goats, but now has a well-established understorey of rowan, holly and hazel. Occasional mature sycamore, birch, ash and beech trees can be found in places. Of particular note, is the vivid carpet of bluebells which covers the woodland floor in spring. There is a variety of ferns, including hard shield, scaly male and hart's tongue.

Many species of bird frequent this wood, such as wood warblers, tree creepers, buzzards, owls and redstarts among others. A network of informal paths pass through the wood with perfect spots to watch the wildlife or sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

If It Were Mine

A lovely oak wood such as Coed Tafalog is ideal for someone looking to practice small-scale silviculture, perhaps fuel a woodburner with good scope to undertake some light thinning works. I would encourage wildlife by installing birdboxes and possibly a bench to sit back and enjoy the tranquillity.
