Victoria Jubilee Wood is a delightful woodland located just outside the rural village of Llandyrnog, North Wales. The towns of Ruthin and Denbigh are roughly equidistant at some 5 miles away by car. The property is accessed off a quiet lane through a secure metal gate. Discrete woodlands such as this rarely become available. With peaceful surrounding countryside of rolling farmland, it features attractive views of the Clwydian Range to the east.
From the gate one arrives at a sheltered area of grassland, around an acre in size with several mature broadleaf trees to the boundaries, including a remarkable ancient black poplar. This space has been used by the current owners for various activities. It could potentially be utilised for small scale horticulture or possibly grazing purposes.
Entering the woodland, the species composition is initially dominated by mature alder trees, which are thriving in the moist soil conditions found to the northeast of the wood. A network of drainage channels can be seen, with a large pond to the centre and a lovely veteran oak tree standing at its edge. To the southwest the tree composition changes to ash, crack willow and mature pine. The understorey includes hawthorn, wild rose, hazel, honeysuckle and holly, as well as elder, rhododendron and broad buckler fern. Several veteran oaks line the fenced boundaries.
A secure wooden cabin, erected some 10 - 15 years ago, stands in the centre of the wood and is used for dry storage and summer camping. A striking feature of this woodland is its conservation and wildlife value, especially avian. The ambiance of Victoria Jubilee Wood is filled with a chorus of birdsong. Buzzards nest in the Scots pines to the western tip, whilst other birds include owls, woodpeckers, duck and numerous small birds, including goldcrests.
If It Were Mine
There is some scope to coppice and gently thin parts of the woodland to realise a sustainable source of timber. I would periodically control rhododendron and further encourage wildlife through the installation of bird and bat boxes. Victoria Jubilee Wood has abundant opportunities for future management.
