Description

Misty Copse lies within a large gated woodland near the attractive village of Maeshafn, in the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Mold is about 15 minutes to the east and Ruthin a similar distance to the west. The A55 dual carriageway is just 8 miles to the northeast enabling easy access from Manchester and the West Midlands.

The wood has a gentle west-facing aspect with moderate slopes and terraces punctuated by occasional small limestone bluffs. It is dominated by mid-rotation beech of good form, with oak and ash making up the majority of the rest of the stand. The wood also supports a few elm and birch plus occasional larger full-canopy mature beech stems. It is believed the trees were planted in the late 1960s or early 1970s. The species are well suited to the lime-rich conditions and are consequently exhibiting good growth and form.

As is typical of beech woods, the woodland floor is pleasingly devoid of entangling vegetation and is a delight to walk with green dapple shade in summer and carpets of copper leaves underfoot in winter.

Misty Copse is reached by a good hard track that is suitable for cars and which runs the entire west side of the property giving easy access and facilitating extraction of forest produce. An easily-worked wood with plenty of scope for tranquil enjoyment awaits the new owner.

If It Were Mine

A programme of progressive light thinning would ensure the optimal development of the stand as well as yielding plenty of logs for hearth or campfire. A Forestry Commission thinning licence is in place until April 2017 (renewal should be a formality).
