Pentre-bach Copse (or Coedlan in Welsh) occupies a small enclosed field just outside the envelope of Llanaelhaearn, a small village in the northeast corner of the Lleyn Peninsula some five miles north of Pwllheli. Caernarfon is about 14 miles to the northeast.

The field was planted in January 2014 under the Glastir grant scheme. An incoming owner would need to take on the obligation to continue to establish the trees in line with the Glastir contract.

The planting is composed of a diverse mix of native broadleaves including birch, oak, rowan, aspen, wych elm and alder plus some woody shrubs at the fringes. These species are well suited to this site and thanks to good management they have established well in their first growing season. When we visited in March we found just two failures out of 370 transplants. The trees have been weeded this spring and the planting looks to be in good heart with the saplings poised for some significant growth next year.

This young wood occupies an attractive south-westerly aspect. Being in a slightly elevated position there are long views over the Lleyn hills and there are also glimpses of the sea to both north and south across a diverse landscape of fields and woods with open moorland above.

The wood is accessed directly off a quiet unclassified public road via a modest grass track enabling parking within the property. Inspection will soon confirm that Pentre-bach offers an excellent base for those who like holidays under canvas with privacy among the emerging trees amidst beautiful open country. Amenity of this quality seldom comes with this ticket price.

If It Were Mine

I would spot weed the young trees for a couple more years to ensure rapid and secure establishment. Thereafter I would visit (with or without camping kit) as often as possible to enjoy the development of this attractive young wood.

Directions & Access

From Caernarfon head southwest on the A487. After about 3½ miles fork right at the roundabout onto the A499 signed for Pwllheli. Continue on this road for a further 10½ miles to Llanaelhaearn staying on the A499 as you pass through the village.

Turn sharp left onto a narrow single track road immediately after passing the last house in the village (about 100m before the national speed limit sign) and continue for 1/3 mile. The entrance to the property (A) is a wooden gate on your left, immediately opposite the entrance to Pentre Bach Uchaf (a small cottage with a red-roofed static caravan adjacent).

Please park in the entrance to the wood.


The entire boundary ABC is defined by perimeter stock fencing.
