Square Covert lies towards the west side of a substantial private gated woodland near the attractive village of Maeshafn, in the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Mold is about 15 minutes to the east and Ruthin a similar distance to the west. The A55 dual carriageway is just 8 miles to the northeast enabling easy access from Manchester and the West Midlands.
The wood has a gentle west-facing aspect with moderate slopes and terraces punctuated by occasional small limestone bluffs. Between the stems there are glimpses across the valley to the summit of Moel Famau (554m) and Offa's Dyke with the prospect of enjoying many a summer eve’s sunset.
The wood is well stocked by beech dating from the '60s and '70s with perhaps a 20% cover of ash dotted through. A few silver birch and a single Scots pine complete the tree layer. The beech and ash are of good form and are growing well on the fertile lime-rich soils. Hazel, hawthorn and holly bushes are thinly scattered across the site beneath which are scattered patches of bluebell, wood anemone and fern.
A thinning licence is in place which will enable a new owner to begin a programme of progressive light thinning to ensure the optimal development of the stand as well as yielding a useful supply of logs.
As is typical beneath beech stems, the woodland floor is an uncluttered carpet of beech leaves enabling easy walking throughout, aided by a number of soft tracks which bisect the wood. A well found hard track from the public road runs along the entire west edge of the property enabling good access by car, thus affording easy and affordable amenity plus the opportunity to practice some small-scale silviculture and extract the produce.
Accessibility, tranquillity and the prospect of quiet enjoyment are all in abundance in Square Covert.
If It Were Mine
I’d create a hard standing area for parking and perhaps link this to some soft internal tracks to aid future management. Felling the odd stem (along with fallen dead wood) would feed the stove or campfire. A chainsaw by day and a wine glass in the evening should do it!

Please note we do not give out keys for viewing.
Enter the forest at this gate and walk up the main track for about 450 metres until you come to a line of blue-topped posts running up the hill to your left. You are now at point C on the plan. Square Covert is on your left after this point.

Continue for 1.2 miles then turn right into the village of Maeshafn at a small grass triangle.
