Description

Wanderers End is a delightful and diverse woodland set amongst a wider forest within the tranquil Shropshire countryside. Some three miles south of the M54 and a short distance east of historic Shrewsbury, this mainly broadleaf wood is ideally located and forms part of an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland.

This distinctive wood slopes discreetly down from the east where some impressive examples of mature oak, ash, birch and alder stand on fertile loamy clay soils, along with the occasional yew tree. The rich understory is adorned with holly, laurel, rowan and hazel coppice, providing shelter for the abundant fallow deer population. As the woodland levels out to the western side of the access track, a mature alder plantation provides a lush habitat for grasses, mosses, fungi and insect life. The adjacent babbling stream flanking the western boundary adds to the diversity of this exceptional amenity woodland. Sightings of local bird life such as song thrush and tawny owl are also commonplace in the area.

The charming, undulating topography on the eastern side of the wood offers some grassy open spaces where active wildlife footprints intertwine through the imposing mature trees. This woodland offers a perfect backdrop for sitting quietly on a sunny afternoon immersing oneself in a rich woodland habitat, with the opportunity to also practice some light silviculture within the alder plantation.

The woodland benefits from excellent access and parking via a newly stoned track that is suitable year-round for a 2WD vehicle.

If It Were Mine

The alder plantation could benefit from a light thinning, taking advantage of the current Forestry Commission felling licence in place. Alder being an ideal timber to process into charcoal, I would use the resultant thinning crop as a charcoal supply, maybe to fuel summer BBQs in the open spaces within the woodland.
