| Description: | Coed y Chwarel contains a mixture of trees, many of which are mid-rotation Douglas Fir but there also some large sections of Oak, especially along the southern slopes. All the trees would benefit from a degree of thinning sometime in the next 10 years. It is likely that a proposal to remove the conifers and replace them with site native broadleaves is likely to be well supported by the Forestry Commission and Countryside Council for Wales. There are several groups of Oak trees scattered through the woodland, mainly containing Quercus petraea (native Welsh Oak) but also occasional Red Oak, which give the woodland a wonderful contrast of colours in Autumn. The access to this woodland from the council road is along a good hard forest road, suitable for vehicles at all times of the year. Three boundaries have other woodland beyond, and the fourth is the council highway below. This is a small woodland on the edge of a much larger forest. It is classified as an Ancient Woodland, having been recorded as woodland since the year 1600. The whole of the forest area is also inside the Cadair Idris ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. It has this designation because of many biological, geological and geomorphological features. To find out more about the reasons for the designation click on the link below to view details of the SSSI. The Tal-y-Llyn valley is one of the classic beauty spots in Wales and this woodland is well worth a visit. |

Drive straight up the hard forest road until you get to a wooden post with an orange painted top at the side of the road by a junction to the right. Take this right turn up the hill. This is point B on the plan below. Continue for approximately 250 metres until you see a post with a yellow painted top on your right (point C on the plan). Turn right here and continue until you see wooden posts on each side of the road with red and green painted tops. This is the start of Coed y Chwarel, and point F on the plan below.
