A mainly Scots Pine woodland with scattered mixed broadleaves and good access along a grassy track. Just outside the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

Promise Wood is a mainly Scots Pine woodland, with scattered broadleaves including Oak, Ash, Beech, Alder, Willow, Hazel, Holly, Hawthorn and Sweet Chestnut. The understorey is mainly Birch, Rowan, regenerating Ash and Sweet Chestnut. There is also a band of Beech trees about 20 metres wide that run parallel to the road. Quite a surprising diversity that gives this woodland a very interesting feel.

The conifers are fast approaching maturity and one management option would be to slowly thin them out to allow the broadleaves to become dominant. This slow conversion is a good low-impact solution that would produce an attractive mixed woodland without the trauma of clear felling.

Some of the more open glades are carpeted in bluebells and wood anemones in the spring. The ground rises gently to the south, giving generally good drainage. A shallow seasonal watercourse greatly adds to the habitat diversity of the woodland.

The woodland is classified as Ancient Woodland, which means it has had continuous tree cover since 1600. It is full of wildlife including owls, hawks, buzzards, woodcock, a multitude of songbirds and many Fallow deer, including a rare white one.

The access to the woodland is along a good grassy track. It lies at around 150 metres above sea level and the soils are freely draining fertile loams.

Leave Royal Tunbridge Wells on the A267 heading south.

About 1 mile after you leave the built up area of the town you will see a sign for Tate Fencing on your left. Turn into their gateway and then stay to the right of the fencing sales yard, driving into a car park.

Park your car here. At the far end of the car park you will find a gate into the woodland. Walk around this gate (point B on the plan below) and walk straight on for about 100 metres.

Take the first turning right (C) up the grass track and walk on for a further 120 metres until you see a wooden post with a blue, green and yellow painted top. This is point D on the plan below. Promise Wood is now ahead and on your right.
