| Description: | An attractive woodland of young broadleaved trees, including many Birch, Sweet Chestnut, Ash, Sycamore, Hornbeam and Oak. The trees are now between 15 – 30 feet high and growing well on the light fertile mineral soils. Chestnut coppice forms the framework to the growing trees, but the species composition could be manipulated by thinning to favour any of the species present. A thinning operation would not only benefit the woodland, it would also produce a good quantity of valuable firewood that would make a sustainable supply for a household with a wood stove. Wildlife and conservation are of particular interest here, with many species of wild plants and flowers, as well as many birds, deer and small mammals. Buzzards, Hawks, and Owls are common, and a local population of Roe Deer are frequently seen. Grey squirrels are abundant, and the woodland would benefit from a level of control. The woodland is on a flat site, with a gentle stream forming the eastern boundary. The entire area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest as an example of lowland native woodland with specific reference to the fauna and flora present in the open glades. Natural England (previously English Nature) specifically recommends the creation of more open glades that will be of benefit to the wild flowers found in the wood. | Directions: | Heading south east on the A21 from Royal Tunbridge Wells, continue past the turning for Lamberhurst. About 2 miles past Lamberhurst turn left up the narrow road signposted for Kilndown (just before a Little Chef). After about ½ mile you will come into the village of Kilndown. As you enter the village take the first right turn and then right again 150 metres further on. You will now be in Rogers Rough Road. After another ½ mile you will see an entrance with two wooden gates on your right. On the gates is a sign saying “Combwell Project”. Go through these gates (shutting them if they are already shut) and park where you can without blocking the track. If you then walk on down the track, passing the stables on your left, you will come into the woodland. Just inside the woodland you will see that the track splits, and the left hand fork goes up past a steel container. Follow this left hand fork. Walk for another 300 metres and you will see a wooden post with a red painted top on your right. This marks the north west corner of Birch Wood, marked X on the plan below. |
