| Description: | Coed Foel Ddu contains a mixture of trees, much of which is mid-rotation Douglas Fir, with some scattered Larch and groups of Oak. These trees could be thinned sometime in the next ten years, or alternatively, a proposal to remove the conifers and replace them with site native broadleaves is likely to be well supported by the Forestry Commission and Countryside Council for Wales. There are several groups of Oak trees scattered through the woodland, mainly containing Quercus petrea (native Welsh Oak) but also quite a few Red Oak, which give the woodland a wonderful contrast of colours in Autumn. The access to this woodland from the council road is along a good hard forest road, suitable for vehicles at all times of the year. On three sides of the woodland is more forestry, and the fourth is open grazing land running up the mountain to Foel Ddu, a subsidiary peak on the side of Cadair Idris. This is a small woodland on the edge of a much larger forest. It is classified as an Ancient Woodland, having been recorded as woodland since the year 1600. The whole of the forest area is also inside the Cadair Idris ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. It has this designation because of many biological, geological and geomorphological features. To find out more about the reasons for the designation click on the link below to view details of the SSSI. The Tal-y-Llyn valley is one of the most beautiful locations in Wales and this woodland is well worth a visit. |

| Directions: | From the A487 Dolgellau – Machynlleth road, take the B4405 west towards Tal-y-Llyn and Abergynolwyn. You will soon come to Tal-y-Llyn Lake on your right. Just past the end of the lake you will see our first ‘For Sale’ sign in a tree on your right. Continue past this for another 1000 metres until you come to a second sign. Turn right up the hard road immediately in front of our sign. Drive straight up the hard road, past a couple of right turns until you get to a wooden post with an orange painted top at the side of the road by a junction to the right. Take this right turn up the hill to the end of the road. As you near the end you will drive past a post with a green and orange painted top. This is the boundary to Coed Foel Ddu, and the parking area is inside the woodland that is for sale. Please park your car here. The track that leads further into the woodland is not suitable for cars. You can drive to the bottom boundary of Coed Foel Ddu by taking the first turning right after you turned off the main council highway (see plan). If you drive along this bottom road you will come to a post with an orange top on your left, indicating the south west corner of Coed Foel Ddu, then further on a blue post indicating the south east corner. |
