| Description: | Red Oak Wood contains a mixture of trees, much of which is mid-rotation Douglas Fir, with some scattered larch. These trees could be thinned sometime in the next ten years, or alternatively it is likely that a proposal to remove the conifers and replace them with site native broadleaves would be well supported. There is a very attractive area of Oak on the lower slopes, which contains several Red Oak trees (which is the origin of the woodland name). These have seeded well in recent years and many young Red Oaks are growing up under the larger canopy. The access to this woodland from the council road is along a good hard forest road, suitable for vehicles at all times of the year. On three sides of the woodland is more forestry, and the fourth is open grazing land running up the mountain to Cadair Idris. This woodland is a small woodland on the edge of a much larger forest. The woodland is classified as an Ancient Woodland, having been woodland continuously since the year 1600. The whole of the forest area is also inside the Cadair Idris ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. It has this designation because of many biological, geological and geomorphological features. To find out more about the reasons for the designation click on the link below to view details of the SSSI. The Tal-y-Llyn valley and lake is one of the beautiful locations in Wales and this woodland is well worth a visit. |

| Directions: | From the A487 Dolgellau – Machynlleth road, take the B4405 east towards Tal-y-Llyn and Abergynolwyn. You will soon come to Tal-y-Llyn Lake on your right. Just passed the end of the lake you will see our first ‘For Sale’ sign in a tree on your right. Continue passed this for another 1000 metres until you come to a second sign. Turn right up the hard road immediately in front of our sign. Drive straight up the hard road, round a sharp right hand corner and then along a straight for another ¾ mile until you see a wooden post on your left with a blue painted top. This is point A on the plan below. Red Oak Wood is now above you. To drive up the road which takes you into the centre of Red Oak Wood you should continue for another 500 metres and then take the road turning uphill sharp left (point B on the plan below). About 250 meters up this road you will come to wooden posts with red tops (point C). This is the start of Red Oak Wood. If you drive a bit further you will come to a wide parking area at the end of the hard road (point D). |
