| Description: | Platters Wood is classified as an ancient woodland, which means that it has been recorded to have had continuous tree cover since 1600. It is packed full of mature broadleaved trees right on the banks of the Menai Straits, just outside the city of Bangor. The woodland is accessed along a good tarmac private drive, with a gateway and a small hard surfaced parking area. The woodland is subject to a Tree Preservation Order, and no felling has been done for many years. Consequently it is packed with tall mature trees, including Oak, Ash, Sycamore, Yew, Wych Elm, Hazel, Holly and Birch. The combination of the peaceful location, good access, beautiful trees and coastal situation all conspire to make this a perfect little woodland for amenity and recreational use. It is very rare to find a woodland that has its own access to the sea. The wood is on flat or gently sloping ground, except right at the waters edge where there is a short steep drop. Access to the water is relatively easy as long as you choose the right route. The water in the Menai Straits is tidal and very fast flowing when tides are changing. The Menai Straits is highly valued for its unique marine ecology, is classified as a Special Area of Conservation, and is proposed as a Marine Nature Reserve. As you walk through the woodland you may come across some large baulks of timber. These come from the wooden warship HMS Conway, which was a Naval training ship that ran aground on the Platters (a notorious area of shallow rocks) in 1952. The ship was salvaged into Platters Wood by being winched up in sections. You may come across several large steel girders sticking out of the ground. These were hammered into the ground to anchor the winches used in the salvage. Most of the timbers were removed, but a few were left behind. |

| Directions: | From the A55 dual carriageway, take the exit signed for Bangor A487 and Hospital. Please note this is one of three exits signed for Bangor ! At the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road take the first exit. You will very soon come to a second roundabout. At this one take the second exit signed for Menai Bridge. After about ¾ mile you will come to a third roundabout. Take the first exit for Menai Bridge, and then just as you go under the bridge stays (before you drive onto the bridge) turn left down a narrow road. Continue down this road, past the small business park, straight through the gates for Treborth Botanical Gardens, and then for another 400 metres until you see our ‘for sale’ sign on your right. This is the start of Platters Wood. Please make sure you park in a place that does not block the road for other traffic. |
